Aktif cümlelerde, özne işi yapar; pasif cümlelerde, özne işin yapıldığı konumundadır. İşte İngilizce’ de aktif ve pasif cümle örnekleri:
Aktif: The chef prepares the meal.
Pasif: The meal is prepared by the chef.
Aktif: The student answered the question.
Pasif: The question was answered by the student.
Aktif: The gardener is planting the flowers.
Pasif: The flowers are being planted by the gardener.
Aktif: She will write a novel.
Pasif: A novel will be written by her.
Aktif: The committee has chosen a new president.
Pasif: A new president has been chosen by the committee.
Bu örneklerde görüldüğü gibi, pasif yapılarda genellikle “by” ifadesi kullanılır, ancak her zaman zorunlu değildir. Pasif yapı genellikle öznenin kim olduğunun önemli olmadığı durumlarda tercih edilir.
